Vision |
 |
Lately I've been thinking a lot about vision, not
just because I need a new set of glasses, but because I enjoy
the process of looking toward future possibilities. As I've
been traveling around North America speaking to different
groups, I have been challenging a number of people to set a
vision for themselves. In my hand out for The S.T.A.R. Within
You program, I challenge people to write down 20 things that
they'd like to do, have or be. As I am standing at the front
of the room asking people to write down the things they want
in their life I am always taken by the fact that this is
handled so differently by different people. Some write
furiously; for some their goals come slowly; and for others it
seems some they don't have the strength to lift their pen.
After I give the participants a few minutes to work on this
exercise I ask people how it felt to do the assignment. The
adjectives range from exciting to scary to hard to inspiring
to impossible. What a great lesson for people to realize that
for them this challenge is difficult. Each time I ask, "Why
was it difficult?" And what it comes down to every time is
that miserable four letter word: fear. People tell me that
they're afraid to write down their visions or dreams in case
they don't happen. Have we been trained to fear the punisher?
Have we been trained to feel bad if we don't achieve what we
set out to achieve?
As a coach my job is to coach success. My definition of
success is simply the attainment of predetermined goals. So
whether big or small I challenge you to set some goals so that
you can get in the habit of attaining them and this will, in
turn, make the bigger ones seem possible.
On the flip
side of the coin I constantly see illustrations of people who
set large ambitions goals and then realize after time they
have achieved them.
What would you like the rest of your life to look
like? What would you like to do, have or be? What would
you like for your career, family, health, and financial
position? Where would you like to live? What would you
like your relationships with friends, family, spirituality and
significant others to be like? How do you want to spend
your recreation time?
Are you truly writing down what
you want or are you being restricted by what you've decide is
possible?
When you have completed this list, I
challenge you to go back and dream some that you would dream
if failure was not possible.
If you're having any
challenges or difficulties with this assignment, please email
Kevin.
