Community

In my last two newsletters I have talked about how many beautiful and important lessons I learned on my trip to Thailand earlier this year.  I would like to continue with this theme and share with you this month the lessons I learned about community in Thailand.

One of the greatest parts of any trip is spending quality time with the people we love and care about.  We get to nurture some of the relationships that form our communities at home; communities of family, friends, and colleagues.  I was truly gifted this year that some of my clients and friends responded to my invitation to come to Thailand with me and to experience what I did last year.  On this trip I spent time with my closest childhood friend.  I built friendships with clients that were more than the professional relationships we had before we left Canada.  And I got to see my new friends in a very special light.

Our community was not only about sharing a wonderful experience together and exploring a new part of the world but also caring for one another and showing support in ways we might not always get to when we are at home. When people on the trip, even for a day or two, weren't feeling healthy, it was amazing how everyone rallied around to help them get better.  The concern was sincere and the support was obvious.  (This also brought with it an additional lesson about how wonderful health is when you have it, and when you don't that there are great lessons that can be learned if you listen to your body.)

We became a community of Canadians who had the common experience of being 17 hours by plane away from home. For example, Jenny my daughter was with us in our group of 50 and I was able to watch her as she became everyone's daughter or granddaughter or friend.  This was an amazing experience for me.  As a group, we also built community with some of the local people.  This made it sad to leave Thailand but enabled us to see that we have friends around the world (some of whom might not even speak our language) and this was a great gift.  We could see that they live lives which are very different from, and also very similar to, our own.  We are all part of the same community.  Think of the communities that you belong to.  What difference can you make in those communities?  What will you do today?

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra On the plane ride from Vancouver to Tokyo, enroute to Thailand in February, Jean-Pierre LeBlanc and I exchanged books.  I gave him "The Saint, The Surfer and the CEO" by Robin Sharma and he gave me "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" by Deepak Chopra.  This book was such a gift to receive during our time in Thailand.  Each of the seven spiritual laws is aligned with the days of the week.  This made it easy to read the sections of the book and also process and experience them day-by-day.  If you choose to use this powerful book day-by-day and week-by-week for a month it will definitely change the way you see the world.
